Teaching the Life Cycle of a Star

Teaching your child about the life of a star gives them a compelling, understandable lesson in physics, astronomy, and chemistry. 

Defining a Star All stars are gas giants in space that can burn as hot as hundreds of millions of degrees. Size-wise, our Sun is on the lower end of average.  

The Birth of a Star Stars begin their lives as Nebulae, or huge clouds of space dust. Over time – sometimes as long as 10 million years – this dust coalesces. 

The Main Sequence

This long, stable period occurs when a star finds equilibrium between heat and gravity. The Main Sequence of a star lasts as long as it has hydrogen to fuel it.

The End Cycle 1. A small- to average-sized star will expand into a Red Giant since its fused atoms have larger nuclei. 2. A larger star will expand into a Red Giant, then keep going. It can explode into a Supernova, expelling gas and energy. 3. After a Supernova, there may remain a Neutron Star or a Black Hole.

Tips for Teaching a Star’s Life 1. You can use common items to demonstrate the disparate sizes of star types.  2. Go out on a clear night with a star atlas and point out a few stars you’ve discussed.
