What is Cinco de Mayo?

On May 5, 1862, the Mexican Army won a war over the French Army in the Battle of Puebla.   Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday that celebrates this historical event. While the day is focused on a historical event, it is also a celebration of Mexican heritage, culture and pride. Cinco de Mayo traditions can include parades, music performances, street festivals and much more!

Cinco de Mayo is mostly celebrated in the United States by people of Mexican heritage.  Some areas of Mexico also celebrate Cinco de Mayo, especially in the state of Puebla.

Are you ready to teach your kids about Cinco de Mayo?

If you’re ready to teach your kids about Cinco de Mayo but are not sure where to start, no worries! We have created a PowerPoint presentation that you can use in your classroom for free!  This Cinco de Mayo presentation includes the following information:

  • Explains what Cinco de Mayo is
  • Discusses food, dance, and colors of this national holiday
  • The importance of Mariachi music
  • DIY Sombrero Craft
  • Tasty treats for the holiday
  • Mexican Hat Dance
  • And more!

This PowerPoint presentation on Cinco de Mayo is a great way to introduce the concept of Cinco de Mayo to your children. It can also be customized to fit the lesson you want to teach. You can edit the text on the slides, add more slides, or delete slides as you see fit.

In fact, you could even delete the text and give the file as a Cinco de Mayo template to your students. Then they could fill it out as part of their research. It makes a great final product for them to present to the class (or to you if you are using it for homeschool).
