Glitter Bomb Card Project Materials
Creating a glitter bomb card is both fun and simple. The best part is that you don’t need many materials. You can find most, if not all, of these at home!
- Cardstock
- Tissue paper
- Glue stick
- Elmer’s glue
- Glitter
- Markers/Scissors for decorating card
- Optional: Construction paper and printer paper to compare how well these perform in place of cardstock.
Let’s Make a Glitter Bomb Card!
To get started, fold the cardstock paper in half, creating the base of the card. Once folded, get creative and decorate the front of the card to make it special. Don’t forget to decorate the inside of the card as well!
Next, cut a small rectangle of tissue paper. Run a glue stick along the long edges of the tissue paper rectangle and fold it over to create a pouch. This pouch will hold the glitter, adding a sparkly surprise to the card.
Carefully pour glitter into the pouch, filling it to a desired level. Then, run the glue stick across the open end of the pouch and fold it over to seal it securely, ensuring none of that glitter escapes prematurely.
Now, it’s time to attach the glitter pouch to the inside of the card. Put Elmer’s glue around the outer edges of the tissue paper/glitter pouch. Press the pouch onto the inside of the card, ensuring it’s positioned near the outer edge but not so close that it becomes visible from the outside.
To complete the assembly, apply glue around the remaining edges of the pouch. Then, press the top of the card onto the pouch. It’s important to wait about 24 hours for the glue to dry completely. During drying, place a heavy book on top of the card for the first few hours to keep it closed and maintain the element of surprise.
Once the glitter bomb card is dry and ready, present it to someone, and watch the joy and delight as they open it and discover the glittery surprise inside. It’s a thoughtful and crafty way to show appreciation and add sparkle to someone’s day.

Adapting the Project to Different Learning Levels
Preschool (ages 3-5)
For preschoolers, creating a glitter bomb card can be an excellent craft project introducing them to basic art skills and tactile exploration. Begin by helping them fold the cardstock paper in half and encouraging them to decorate the front of the card with their favorite colors and simple shapes. This is an excellent opportunity to practice fine motor skills. When making the glitter pouch, discuss the concept of inside and outside, and let them choose their favorite color of glitter. To enhance the experience, talk about the colors and textures they are using and how it makes them feel.
Early Elementary (ages 6-8)
This project offers early elementary students a chance to refine fine motor skills and learn about the fun science of glitter dispersal. Guide them through folding the cardstock paper and decorating the card front with their unique artistic flair. Be sure to practice handwriting skills and spelling. Point out sight words they include in the writing of the card. As they create the glitter pouch, discuss adhesives and how they work. Encourage them to experiment with different amounts of glitter to see how it affects the “glitter bomb” effect. This is also an opportunity to introduce concepts of measurement and volume. Allow kids to use kitchen utensils (i.e., tablespoons) for easy measuring. To increase the difficulty, allow them to use a food scale with a plastic bowl.
Upper Elementary/Middle School (ages 9-12)
Upper elementary and middle school students can take this project to the next level by exploring its science. Encourage them to fold the cardstock paper thoughtfully and craft a front design. When creating the glitter pouch, explain the physics of how air resistance and adhesives work together to keep the glitter inside. Challenge them to experiment with different glitter sizes and types and predict how they might affect the dispersal pattern. This is an excellent opportunity to introduce the concept of controlled variables and experimental design. For example, the control variables would be the size of the card, the size of the tissue paper pouch, and the glue. The independent variable would be the amount of glitter or the size of the glitter. The dependent variable would be the dispersal of the glitter as it falls out of the card.
High School (ages 13-18)
High school students can approach this project with a deeper understanding of the physics involved. Encourage them to explore the principles of aerodynamics and adhesives as they create the glitter pouch. Challenge them to conduct controlled experiments, varying factors such as glitter size, adhesive strength, and card design to observe how they influence the glitter dispersal.
