What Time of Year is Best For Bird Watching With Kids?

Birds live seasonally, just as we do, maybe to an even greater extent. Knowing what time of year birds are most active in your area is important for ensuring your outing is a success and keeping kids interested. 

Winter in the lower 48 is often a good time to see ducks and geese as they’ve come down from further north looking for water that isn’t solid to hang out in. Some birds, such as chickadees and sparrows, live here year-round and can sometimes be spotted in the winter months. 

Spring is when birds become very active after the temperatures begin to warm up. Many migrant species start showing up and almost everybody starts building nests and courting. Some birds will only be passing through, so getting out to watch as often as possible will give you a better chance of seeing some of these species.

In late spring and early summer, you may start seeing juveniles that are similar to, but not quite the same as, their parents. 

Summertime means things are a lot quieter on the birdwatching front. Many birds are busy raising their young. Mid to late summer may be a better time for spotting butterflies than birds. If you live somewhere there are shorebirds, near waterways, or marshy places, you will likely see the most of these species in the summer.
