Bees are so important and we should teach this to our kids, no matter their ages. There are so many fun and educational bee activities for kids that can help drive these concepts home. Keep reading to learn how to be a superhero for bees.
Although we often don’t talk about it much in everyday life, everything we do is built on bees. Our ecosystem is everything we build on, bees are everything we build on.
Our intricate ecosystem is so precious, held up by other ecosystems like supporting strands in a web and if there is a break, it can mean entire sections break off and collapse, including our own.
It stands to reason that we should seek to care for the world around us – as a form of self-care if nothing else. Approximately 70% of our food depends on bees but evidence shows us they are fast losing ground due to many factors, including the use of deeply damaging pesticides (neonicotinoids).
It’s really hard to know how to start or what to do to help – having Aspergers, I (Josie from Where Pokemon Meets Anime) am used to feeling totally overwhelmed over even the smallest things. I have often found it so hard to do the things I know I want to do.
I can’t organize myself and my thoughts and it’s so easy to end up in a downward spiral, feeling so utterly overwhelmed. This leads to giving up. This is why I wanted to create really easy and actionable tips that anyone can jump on and complete.
I hope these bee activities will be perfect for families and kids to complete: actions and activities that are beneficial for us humans at the same time offer an amazing chance to bond as a family and learn to care for the world around us.
It’s so cool that just doing fun things to help out gives us so many positives that spiral and spiral into more positives. It means we talk with our neighbors more, we feel so valued ourselves, we value our contributions to the world around us, we value the beautiful sights we see around us, we value our food more.
As kids we always wanted to be superheroes… we really can be!
Here are your missions. Can you complete them?

7 Fun Bee Activities for Kids to Learn About Bees
Go through these fun bee activities with your kids. They are fun, educational, and impactful. Learn about bees and how to protect and support them.
Make a Bee Hotel
Making a bee hotel is such a fun for all ages. You can find special ready-made bee houses or bee hotels to buy that you can paint and decorate with eco-friendly paints.
These bee hotels are likely to attract solitary bees or pollinators who don’t necessarily have a hive to go back to. These are even better to attract than honey bees as they feel less likely to sting as they are not defending a colony!
These hotels for bees are also perfect places for female bees to lay their eggs. She will leave each egg with its own supply of pollen and the egg is sealed up behind a wall of mud in its own special ‘cell’. The new bees will break out and emerge the following year.
Make a Hanging Basket Full of Bee-Friendly Flowers
You could choose your favorites based on your favorite colors – there is a whole rainbow of bee-friendly flower colors to choose from, from purple Campanula and Lavender to sweet pink and white hardy Geraniums to yellow and orange Marigolds.
You could even make lots of pretty flowering hanging baskets to gift to family and friends as they make such beautiful and wonderful gifts for the home and are bound to be so treasured!
Find hanging baskets on Amazon and just fill them with the dirt and flowers of your choice!
Make a Miniature Garden
Why not create your dream wildlife garden, in miniature form? This is perfect for if you don’t have a garden or outside space to play with, as you only need a pot to plant it in and it could sit on your porch, on your windowsill, or even hang it from your wall outside.
You can have tons of fun with this, making a little town for bees and minibeasts, with little houses made from wood or old plant pots. Pop in a little shallow dish and fill it up with water, then place some pebbles, rocks, or marbles in the water.
This makes a lovely bee bath for your buzzy friends to have a drink from; the rocks or marbles mean that your bees can use them to sit on while they are drinking.
Make Some Wildflower Seed Bombs
Wildflower bombs or DIY seed bombs are easy to make and fun to scatter. You can even give them to friends and neighbors as gifts!
To make them, in a bowl, mix together 1 cup of seeds with 5 cups of compost and 2-3 cups of clay powder or clay soil, then slowly mix in water until everything sticks together. Next, roll the mixture into firm balls and leave them to dry in a sunny spot. You could even make them in different shapes using a cookie cutter.

Have a Bee Day in Your Lessons
Whether you homeschool or go to public school, you could talk to your parent or teacher about having a bee-themed day. Everyone can come dressed as a bee and the day’s lessons and snacks can focus on these beneficial insects.
You could even set up a bee-themed dance and donate money from tickets to bee charities.
Try Out Some Natural Eco-Friendly Weed Killers and Pesticides
Make a science experiment in your own garden and try out different bee-friendly weed killers and pesticides to find the ones that work best! You could try out white vinegar, salt, and dishwashing liquid or recipes with apple cider vinegar.
This means you might be able to find an amazing natural solution for your garden that is even better than chemical formulas that you can recommend to everyone!
Go on a Bee Scavenger Hunt
Go on a nature walk or scavenger hunt in your backyard or at your local park. You could even go on a hike!
While you’re out, make a list of bees and minibeasts you see out and about. Keep a record of what you see and keep track of the insect populations in your area!
