What Is Pi?
In math terms, Pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to the diameter of that circle. In other words, it’s used as “the relationship between a circle’s radius and and a circle’s circumference.” In decimal form, the value of Pi is approximately 3.14.
Pi is also the 16th letter of the Greek alphabet, but that’s not important for this article.
What Is Pi Day?
Pi Day is an annual celebration of the number pi, which is normally written as 3.14 (as in March 14th). It’s celebrated on March 14th because pi is most commonly rounded to 3.14 instead of its true value, which is 3.14159265358979323846….
Some people like to celebrate Pi Day with pie. As in apple pie, pumpkin pie, cherry pie, etc. Others, especially teachers and homeschoolers, like to bring some fun math lessons and activities into the day. This is one area in which math lovers (math teachers, mathematicians, etc) all unite!
Fun Facts About Pi for Pi Day
Here are some fun History of Pi and Pi Day facts to help you celebrate March 14th:
- The first digits of Pi are 3.14159265358979323846….
- The only other numbers that would work in place of Pi in this equation are 0, 1, 2, and 4.
- It’s impossible to write out the entire value of Pi using regular digital typography because it is an infinite number!
- The digits of Pi are used in all “round” mathematical measurements, including circumference, volume, and area.
- Pi is used in many engineering and scientific applications.
- The first Pi Day was celebrated in San Francisco in 1988.
- Pi Day is Albert Einstein’s birthday!
- Pi is an irrational number
- The Pi symbol was first adopted by Swiss mathematician Leonard Euler in 1737.
Pi Day Activities With Kids
While the concept of Pi can be difficult to grasp, engaging in Pi d\Day fun and interactive themed activities is a fun way to help bring the concept home.
Here are some fun ideas for celebrating Pi Day with kids of all ages. Enjoy these Pi-themed activities in your math class or as part of your homeschool lesson plans.
- Learn the basics of circumference and diameter by measuring circular objects around your house.
- Use a compass to draw circles on graph paper.
- Print off and enjoy a fun and interactive Pi Day Activity Pack together!
- See how many digits of Pi you can memorize in a certain amount of time. Whoever can remember the most decimal places will get a prize.
- Teach kids about the first digits of Pi.
- Change the font in a word processing program to Wingdings and use it to type out the first 5,000 digits of Pi.
- Have students calculate how many pie slices there are in a circle or how many square inches there are in a circle.
- Serve some different types of pie.
- Make your own Pi necklace or another jewelry item.
- Create a paper plate Pi that has 3.14 slices, which can be achieved by cutting it with scissors or using a protractor to make the angles.
- Trace the Greek letter on the construction paper and have kids decorate it with different colors to use as a wall decoration.
- Calculate pi with a string! Cut off a piece of string that is equal to the circumference of the circle. Measure it out and divide by the diameter, and students will get their own estimation for pi.
- Have kids cut out 3.14 inch circles from colored paper and link them together to make a paper chain. For every circle they add, have them list a fun fact about pi or recite one of the digits of pi.
- Have a pie eating contest just for fun. This one is just what the doctor ordered for kids! But maybe keep it to mini-pies for younger students.
As you can see, if you’re willing to get a bit creative, there is no limit to the number of Pi Day activities for kids you can come up with and enjoy!
