There are so many skills that can be learned by researching family history. Besides a sense of self, your mini genealogists will also learn:
- Problem Solving Skills – Finding answers leads you to develop Problem Solving Skills – Looking for answers about Who, What, Where, When, Why, How. In turn, answering those questions will involve a good share of the curriculum.
- Research Techniques – knowing what to look for, where to look for it and what to do with what you find.
- Reading – The ability to read and understand the meanings of words in following directions, in evaluating the information found in newspapers, birth certificates, marriage records, death certificates, cemetery records, and other sources. (i.e., How does this information relate to the person/family you are searching about?).
- Writing – You can’t keep all of these facts and details in your head, so you need to understand taking notes and storing information, legibly and clearly. Don’t forget to spell it correctly so you can find it next time.
- Mathematics – You will learn to figure dates and ages, read statistics, and other numerical values.
- Languages – You may need to know another language, (i.e., French or German, etc}. to interpret your ancestors’ records.
- Geography – Where did your ancestors live? What is the elevation? What are the topographical features? (If they Immigrated to a different country, or Emigrated within their country, do you think they would look for a similar type of area? Do farmers go where there are farms?)
- History – Who were the leaders and what were the laws, where your ancestors lived? What major events happened during your ancestors’ lives, such as maybe the Civil War? How did leadership, war and conflict, pandemics, topography, religion, weather, ethnicity, communication, and transportation, influence your ancestor’s choice of home or change of location?
- Career Potential – There are many people making a healthy living in the field of Genealogical Research, some of whose interest began in early grade school.
By inserting genealogy into many of these areas of study, education becomes more interesting, personal, and memorable, because it does relate to each student and their family.
