Art Projects to Add To Your Unit Studies This Fall

No matter the unit study you end up enjoying, it won’t be complete without a fun art project! As the leaves begin to change color and the air grows crisper, fall is the perfect time to add some new art projects to your unit studies.

A good art project can stimulate the brain while improving and developing creative thinking skills and fine motor skills.

  1. Create a fall-themed collage. Using construction paper, glue, and scissors, have your kids create a scene depicting all their favorite things about fall. Leaves, pumpkins, apples, and more can all be included in the collage.
  2. Paint a Fall landscape. Get out the watercolors and encourage your kids to paint a picture of Autumn. They could include rolling hills covered in trees with changing leaves, or a cozy cabin nestled in the woods. Add some detail by including animals like squirrels or birds.
  3. Make a Fall-themed sculpture. Using clay, have your kids sculpt their own fall-inspired creations. Leaves, pumpkins, acorns, and branches can all be used to create unique sculptures. Once they’re finished, you can display them around the house as part of your fall decor!
  4. Draw a Fall still life. Gather some Fall-themed items like leaves, acorns, and pumpkins, and set them up on a table or piece of cardboard. Have your kids draw or paint the still life, paying attention to shading and perspective.
  5. Write and illustrate a Fall story. Encourage your kids to use their imaginations and write their own stories set in the Fall season. They can illustrate the story themselves or use stickers or magazine cutouts to add visual interest.
  6. Create a Fall memory board. Have your kids gather up fallen leaves, berries, acorns, and other natural materials from outside. Then help them glue the items onto a piece of construction paper or poster board to create a one-of-a-kind memory board celebrating all things Fall!
  7. Make your own marbled paper. Add a few drops of fall-colored paint to a pan of water and swirl the colors together. Dip a sheet of white paper into the pan and let it dry. Use your marbled paper to create cards, gift tags, or other Fall decorations.
  8. Make some nature prints. Gather fallen leaves or collect some Fall harvest fruits and vegetables (such as apples, squash, etc). Paint the leaves or cut the produce in half and dip the open end in paint. Stamp or mark up your papers until you have a collection of Fall-themed nature prints!
  9. Paint a pumpkin. Instead of carving pumpkins, paint or use markers to decorate your pumpkins. Then place them someplace where they can be seen and enjoyed.

What Is A Unit Study?

What is a unit study? A unit study is a miniature curriculum that centers around a particular theme, topic, or unit of study. It is a great way to learn about a variety of subjects while still focusing on one central idea.

The very best unit studies include resources, lessons, and activities that encompass multiple areas of study such as science, math, reading, Language Arts, literature, history, social studies, geography, and so on. But not every unit study needs to include every subject and you can enjoy plenty of great ideas that only encompass one or two subjects. So don’t stress and have a great time with your family!

For example, if you were doing a unit study on pumpkins, you would learn about the life cycle of a pumpkin, how to carve a pumpkin, the history of pumpkins, and even read pumpkin-themed books. You could even do some hands-on pumpkin STEM activities.

You might even wrap up your studies with a trip to a local pumpkin patch! (Or you could even start your unit study with this fun activity.)

Basically, with a unit study, the sky is the limit!

Why Use Unit Studies?

Unit studies are great for a number of reasons. First, they are very flexible, which is great for families who have kids of different ages or abilities. Second, they can be easily customized to fit your family’s needs and interests. Lastly, they are a lot of fun!
