When Should I Teach My Kids How To Read?

When should you teach your kids how to read? What age should children know how to read by?

There’s no one answer to these questions. It really depends on your child’s individual development.

I’m currently homeschooling my 8 kids and each of them has learned to read in their own time.

My oldest was 11 before he know how to read despite my constant teaching, working, nagging, and showering with resources and games. He just refused to learn and there was nothing I could do about it.

My second child was reading at 8 years old. My third started to read at 5.

My fourth child started reading at 8 and my fifth child just turned 7 and is finally starting to grasp the concept.

Children six, seven, and eight are not reading yet, though we continue to work with them.

None of these situations is right or wrong – they just are! There is no right or wrong time to teach a child to read, so long as they keep progressing and improving. They’ll eventually get it – I Promise!

Some kids learn to read naturally and easily while others need a little more help and guidance. If you’re not sure where your child falls on this spectrum, there are a few things you can look for.

One early indicator is whether your child is interested in books and stories. If they are, they may be ready to start learning how to read.

You can also look for color by code worksheets which can help your child understand basic concepts like letters and sounds.

Are Color Words Considered Sight Words?

While color words like “red,” “yellow,” and “green” are certainly some of the most commonly used words in the English language, they are not typically considered to be “sight words.” This is because color words do not follow the standard rules of English spelling and pronunciation.

For example, the word “red” doesn’t follow the pattern of most one-syllable words, which typically have the main stress on the first syllable. Additionally, color words are often irregular in terms of spelling (e.g. “gray” vs. “grey”).

As a result, children often have difficulty memorizing them. However, there are a number of strategies that can help.

One is to use color-by-code sight word pages and worksheets, which can help kids to associate the correct spelling with the correct color. Another is to make a game out of it by hiding color word flashcards around the house and seeing how quickly your child can find them all.

With a little practice, your child will be reading and spelling color words in no time!
