What Are Mad Libs?

Before we get into the typing templates, let’s talk about what Mad Libs are.

Mad Libs are a word game where players fill in blanks with random words to create a funny story. They’re often used as a party game or icebreaker, but they can also be used for educational purposes.

For example, you could use a Mad Libs template to help kids learn about parts of speech. By filling in the blanks with different words, they would be able to see how the meaning of the story changes based on the type of word used. You’ll find prompts for nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and so on.

When you use Mad Libs for Middle Schoolers, you’ll also get prompts such as comparative adjectives, past participles, and even some with Shakespearean language!

This is a great way to help kids understand how parts of speech work and how important it is to use the correct word in a sentence. It’s also a lot of fun!

Mad Libs is a trademarked name, so to avoid legal issues, many people are coming up with Mad Lib knockoffs that are being dubbed fill in the blank pages, or something similar.

When you see terms such as fill in the blank printable pages or ad libs pages, they are often using this resource as inspiration.

How Do These Ad Libs Typing Templates Work?

The Mad Libs Typing Template is a really simple but effective concept. Rather than memorizing where random letters are on the keyboard like they do in traditional typing games and programs, kids will create word maps or patterns in their brain. This will help them to memorize whole words and where they are on the keyboard.

In turn, this will help them to improve their typing skills. And because the process is so much fun, they won’t even realize that they’re learning!

First, you’ll print out your Ad Libs Typing Template. I’ve got a fun bundle of Ad Libs Typing Templates available in my shop, or you can download the free typing template sample at the bottom of this article.

Once you’ve printed out your PDF pages, you’ll grab your story template and set it up somewhere you (or your child) can see while sitting at the keyboard. This could be right above the keyboard leaning against your screen or it could be right next to the keyboard on your desk or table.

Make sure you have a word document of some kind open so you can type!

Now for the fun part – start typing! Read your story template and type out what you see. As you come to a blank space, the challenge is to mentally fill in the blank space while you are typing so there is no pause or gap.

However, this part may take a bit of practice so don’t feel bad if you have to pause at all of the blanks for some thinking time in the beginning. Your skills will grow over time (and your speed and accuracy will improve).

Once you’ve finished typing out your story, read it to yourself or to a friend and see what funny compilations you were able to come up with! (Or your student rather than you, of course).

Feel free to reuse the template again and again! The story should change every time which will keep things interesting. And every time you practice, your typing skills will improve! It’s a great combination!
