I’m Afraid to Homeschool – Why Homeschooling Doesn’t Have to be Scary
One of the biggest reasons people are so afraid to homeschool is because the thought of ‘school at home’ is daunting. Many people who tried homeschooling give it up and go back to public school because homeschooling can be scary! But homeschooling doesn’t have to be scary!

“Schooling at home”
The method of traditional schooling has been deeply ingrained into our society. When people picture school at home, they picture a mother (or a father!) standing in front of a couple of kids. They might be at the kitchen table, or they might be sitting in little desks in a spare room dubbed ‘the school room.’ They have a shelf filled with school books. They have a list of subjects they must cover every single day. Children must focus on each subject for at least an hour each day. Monday through Friday schooling, no exceptions. Each kid must complete numerous worksheets every day. Tests and exams are always included.
Somehow the parent is able to give each kid one-on-one grade-level specific instructions for every subject, all while the siblings work on their worksheets quietly with minimal help.
Younger siblings, of course, play quietly with a collection of educational toys in the next room.
These students must stay completely on-par, if not ahead of, peers their age who still attend traditional school.
By the way – it’s typically expected that the parent in this imagined situation has a high-ranking college degree, preferably in something pertaining to children or education. Any missed days, or missed subjects, or crying, fighting kids leaves the parent with failed expectations and a sense of being terribly overwhelmed.
No wonder people are so afraid of homeschooling!
That’s not to say homeschooling that way is bad. If that’s what works for you and your family, then great! That’s fantastic! But for a lot of us, that vision is just plain scary!
Did you know homeschooling doesn’t have to be that way? When done right, homeschooling can be incredibly easy, and stupendously fun!

I’m no genius. I got good grades in high school, and I did attend some college, but I don’t have a college degree, and it’s been years since I’ve been in a classroom.
For someone who almost majored in English, even I have noticed my once articulate language skills slipping away with lack of use. But I know that I am perfectly and completely capable of teaching my children at home. I know that I can either teach them or give them guided instructions in anything they need to know. And you know what? You can too!
Homeschooling isn’t a one-size-fits-all activity. It’s different for everybody, and that’s okay!
Homeschooling doesn’t have to be scary. Our family decided to create this blog to help you feel brave. My dearest hope is that through this blog, we can help families all over see how easy, fun, and fulfilling homeschooling can be!
We’re all in this together.
Our family has seen so many good things come from our decision to homeschool, and I want every family to find that same fulfillment.
