Christian Homeschool Program That's Easy To Love 1 Practical Help for Homeschool Parents and Teachers

Christian Homeschool Program That’s Easy To Love

When searching for a homeschool curriculum, especially a curriculum on the subjects of science or history, Christian families often worry about what the program will be teaching their kids. Politically correct history and science lessons tend to go against Christian worldview teachings and therefore parents must be diligent in making sure their kids are not being indoctrinated unintentionally.

Thankfully, more and more options for Christian homeschooling families are becoming available. One of those quality Christian education choices is Sonlight.

What Is Sonlight?

Sonlight is a Christian homeschool program, or Christian homeschool curriculum, that is designed with homeschooling families in mind.

Sonlight focuses on a literature-based approach and even the youngest of students can enjoy learning with engaging books filled with large and colorful illustrations. They cater to homeschooling students from Preschool all the way through High School (12th grade).

While their history curriculums are especially appealing, Sonlight also has Christian homeschool programs that cover science, math, language arts, and more.

I have never tried a Sonlight program before, but I have been curious about them for quite a while now, so I started out with a small portion of this complete curriculum – the 2 Heroes and Happenings books with the Instructor Guide.

Picture Book Based Program for Kindergartners

Riddle me this – do kindergartners do better with books and literature or with quizzes and textbooks? If your kids are anything like mine, you answered books and literature. This is why a picture book based program like Sonlight is perfect for kindergartners.

Sonlight’s Exploring American History: History / Bible / Literature K is a wonderful resource for young kids. The books are fun and engaging and young elementary-aged kids will really benefit from reading these wonderful stories.

There are two books in particular though that kindergartners, as well as older siblings, will really benefit from. Heroes and Happenings is a two-volume set that is filled with many short stories and blurbs about famous heroes throughout American history.

I know these books were written with five and six-year-olds in mind, but my eight and nine-year-olds also enjoyed sitting in on the stories and learning about these figures. And I’m a sucker for any homeschooling curriculum that allows me to bring in kids of multiple ages.

Using Heroes and Happenings in a Large Family Homeschool

When we first received our new Sonlight curriculum in the mail, we were so excited! I could hardly wait to open the box and show my kids what was inside. I have two kids that are in the targeted kindergarten age range, but my older kids were excited to rifle through the books as well.

My husband and kids are official card-carrying members of the Cherokee Nation, so when I found the story on Sequoya in the Heroes and Happenings books, I shared that one with my kids first. (I know, I’m a rule-breaker and read a few stories out of the intended order laid out in the instructor guide.) The kids found Sequoya’s story fascinating and it was fun to teach them something about their specific heritage they had never learned before.

Besides the story about Sequoya, my daughter (6) particularly enjoyed learning about other United States heroes such as Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. She found Harriet to be very brave and wants to be able to stand up for truth and righteousness all her life, just like Harriet. This makes my mama’s heart so proud!

I caught my 9-year-old reading these books independently on her own multiple times, which also made me happy. I love that she’s chosen to dive into books that teach good and truthful things instead of gravitating towards just another adventure novel. Many other homeschool families will also appreciate adding this feature to their home education.
