10 LEGO STEM Activities To Help Your Students Explore and Build Their Way Through STEM:
#1 LEGO Zip Line
Help your students learn a little more about physics and engineering and have a bit of an adrenaline rush by letting them create their very own LEGO zip line!
While a zipline may seem simple and straightforward, it can teach your students a lot about various STEM-related concepts like; Gravity- why does the zip line move down and not up? Friction- Why do some zip lines move easier and faster than others? Slope- how does the steepness of the angle influence the movement of the zip line? Speed- How fast can the cage of the zip line move? And lastly, weight- how does the weight of the cage influence the speed?
This is yet another brilliant STEM activity where you can decide how elaborate or simple you would like this project to be. The more LEGO blocks you have, the bigger you can make it. Your students can even have a race at the end to see whose zip line can zoom by the fastest.

#2 Wind-Powered LEGO Car
This fun engineering activity will allow your students to explore renewable energy concepts by designing and building a LEGO car powered by the wind. We all know just how fun it is to race a car with a remote control or sail a boat down a river or stream. Why can’t we combine these two to make a fun wind-powered LEGO car!
The idea behind this project is to teach your students how useful wind can be, and how the concept of harnessing renewable energy works. They will learn about different factors that may cause their cars to have too much resistance to the wind.

#3 LEGO Marble Run
I remember when I was growing up marbles were all the rage. We created games around them, traded them, and begged our parents to buy us the new, cool, collectible ones! One of the games I remember in particular was marble run!
In this activity, your students will get the chance to create their very own marble run by using their LEGOs! They will also investigate gravity and momentum as they set their colorful marbles loose on the LEGO board.
You can find big, elaborate marble runs to buy online, and you can also build your own with pretty much anything you can find lying around the house. But this LEGO marble run is fun because it’s so simple to make, and also simple to change and create different designs!

#4 LEGO Water Wheel
This activity might need a little more than a few blocks, and your students may get a little wet, but it will all be worth it in the end when they learn to explore hydropower and engineering by constructing a working waterwheel using LEGO elements!
This engineering activity utilizes water as a driving force and is a great way to teach your students about the power of water, how it can move things, and even how it can be used to generate power.
You can use a table or plastic surface, but just make sure that it is tilted at a bit of an angle so that the water can flow freely from one side to the other. Once your students have finished building their waterwheel and created a path for the water to flow, you can either use a bucket or hosepipe to create a little river and watch the wheel come to life.

#5 LEGO Solar System
When I say LEGOs are versatile, I truly mean the are VERSATILE! It seems that there is no subject or area that you cannot explore by using LEGO blocks! In this put-of-this-world LEGO activity, your students will study astronomy and space science by recreating our solar system with LEGO bricks.
The planets may not be perfectly round, with jagged edges poking out all around, but if you study our planets in the solar system carefully, chances are that you’ll find their surfaces are also pretty jagged and edgy from bumping into asteroids and other flying rocks in space.

#6 LEGO Sundial
It might be hard to imagine it in our day and age, but there was a time, long ago when people didn’t have watches and had no means to tell the time. They relied on the sun and shadows to tell them what time it was.
That is exactly what your students will learn to do in this ancient activity with a modern twist. This LEGO sundial can be used to track the shadows and read the time of day! It may sound so simple, but without a watch or anything else to give a hint of what the time is, this little project might actually come in handy.

#7 LEGO Bridge Building
Bridges are one of those engineering marvels that still blows my mind whenever I see one or cross one. It always seems to me like a bit of magic holds it in place, making it hover over the water. Of course, I know that the magic of a bridge lies in its engineering. That is why this activity is the perfect way for your students to learn about structural engineering and design by building bridges out of LEGO bricks and testing their strength.
You can divide your students into groups or make it an individual activity, but be sure to give them some guidelines like how wide and long it should be, and what type of weight it needs to be able to support.
Your students can test out their bridges once they’re done and test them all out see which structures are the strongest. The best part about building these bridges with LEGO blocks is the fact that the students can go back and make adjustments when they see that it doesn’t have the necessary support in place.

#8 LEGO Spirograph
This next project might be for more advanced students and also uses more advanced LEGO components like a motor, turntable and gears. If you have some of these LEGO items already in your collection, then this project can keep your students entertained for hours!
A spirograph machine is a geometric drawing machine that basically consists of a circle moving around inside another circle. There are countless different patterns and spirals that a spirograph can make, and your students can change their own spirograph to create their own unique patterns and pictures!

#9 LEGO DNA Model
Use this next activity to allow your students to explore biology and genetics by constructing a LEGO model of the DNA double helix. We all know that biology can sometimes be hard to understand, especially when dealing with microscopic topics.
But this LEGO DNA Model can help your students visualize how DNA is made and all the different proteins and other molecules that help build that strand of life.

#10 LEGO Area And Perimeter Activity
We’ve been learning a lot about engineering and science, but we can also use LEGO blocks to learn some mathematics concepts. This activity is very simple but can help students visualize different sizes and areas, and also how many of one item might fit into a larger area.
You can create different scenarios about the perimeter or area of the school or house, and give students items and their size and ask them how to fit in each item, or which items can stay and which ones need to go. Like I said, it may be a simple activity, but it is effective in helping students visualize otherwise abstract concepts.
