Our Family’s Impression of Beast Academy
As my regular readers know, I have a large age span of kids. I have a pre-k student, a Kindergarten student, a 2nd grade student, a 3rd grade student, a 5th grade student, and a 7th grade student. I had each of my kids spend some time with these free math games.
When I first told my kids we were going to try out a new math website, I’m not kidding you, they all groaned. Math is not their favorite. I told them they would be fun math games but most of them did not believe me. Oh well. I insisted they give the website a try anyways.
Within a few minutes, they were all laughing and playing together. I think most of them forgot they were supposed to be learning. Now that’s what we all want out of a math resource, right?
My youngest kids enjoyed watching a few minutes worth of video instructions and then the independent learning was over and they were ready to run off and play. I set them free while the older kids kept going through the videos trying to decide on which one to try out next.
The older kids ended up trying several of the games and activities. They had fun creating their own face cards, following along to the in-depth origami tutorials, and creating the colorful, interactive projects. They also loved the magic fortune teller and played that one together for quite some time.
Once the older kids became engrossed in some of the activities, the younger kids came back to watch and participate. If I had focused on finding (and helping with) games that were more appropriate for pre-K and Kindergarten, they would have had more fun and not insisted on running off to play.
But since I’m more of a hands-off homeschool parent, I was okay with letting them do their own thing while the older kids interacted with the games.
As you can tell by the pictures, we played these math games from a hotel room. I loved how even while we were living out of a hotel for a few days, the kids were still able to keep up on their schooling. Portable resources like these are what flexible homeschoolers like us really appreciate.
I particularly liked how the filter worked on this program. I was easily able to sort by desired activity type, my children’s ages, and even by the specific topics I wanted my kids to focus on.
All in all, we were very happy with these activities. I will definitely include more Beast Academy days over the course of the rest of our homeschool year.
While some of the games and activities weren’t completely obvious as to how they related to math specifically, all of them were engaging and all of them stimulated the logic and problem-solving portions of their brains. After all, isn’t that a critical component for a strong math basis?

If you prefer online math games over tabletop math games, you’re in luck because there are plenty of options for you too! My kids love playing computer games and I love when I can sneak in some learning so online math games are a favorite at our house.

Online Math Game Websites
- ABCya – I really like ABCya because you can sort the online games according to age level and they get more and more difficult the older your kids get. Just select the grade your child is in, click on the numbers or math section (depending on the level you’ve selected) and then pick one of the many many games! My kids would play this for hours if I’d let them.
- Education.com – Education.com is another one of our favorite online math game websites. The games are a little more advanced (read – less fun) but the kids still get some learning in without too much complaining. I can typically convince them to do about 20 minutes worth of games before they’re bored.
- Prodigy Math – Prodigy Math is a very popular math game website. This website is even oftentimes used in public school classrooms as a fun math supplement. It is easy to nagivate and there are free and paid options, making them affordable for all. This is an online community which I don’t like but they do have the option of having your kid play in offline mode so they are not interacting with other people over the internet.
- Math Playground – I have never used Math Playground personally but it comes highly recommended by several people in my local homeschool community.
- Splash Learn – During my research, I came across Splash Learn. It looks like it could be a great resource for many families. But I’m going to be honest – when I was signing up the rules just seemd way to strict and rigid for my family’s learning style so I stopped before I completed the signup process. If you’re into rigid schedules, this website might be worth checking out.
