Every child is different and just because you taught one child multiplication tables at one age doesn’t mean you should teach all your other kids at that exact same age. However, that being said, rest assured that most children begin to learn multiplication around 2nd or 3rd grade.
If you want to give your child a head start at, you can begin introducing a multiplication table or two as early as Kindergarten or 1st grade using addition and subtraction concepts.
You don’t need to get too far into the weeds with the details of multiplication at this young age, but if your child is interested and receptive, there’s no harm in showing them the basics.
At this age, make an effort to ensure students’ practice sessions are fun and encouraging. You don’t want them to start out frustrated with times table practice! Include manipulatives and more math games and activities that keep things light and enjoyable with lots of play! And don’t stress if they don’t get the correct answer every time.
Remember – they are still learning tables! Parents and teachers must be patient at this early stage in the multiplication practice game.
Signs Your Kids Are Ready To Learn Multiplication
There is no one answer to this question as different kids will be ready for multiplication at different ages. However, there are some general guidelines you can follow to help you determine when your child is ready to learn multiplication.
Signs that your child may be ready to learn multiplication include being able to fluently add and subtract within 20, and understanding long addition concepts when manipulatives are laid out in front of them. (i.e.if you put 4 groups of 3 MnMs on a plate, can your child add all of them together while keeping them within their groups?)
If your child demonstrates proficiency in these skills, then they are likely ready to start learning multiplication.
How to Teach Multiplication
There are a few different ways you can teach multiplication, and the method you choose will likely depend on your child’s learning style as well as their age.
