3 Simple Christmas Book Activities – Where, Oh Where, is Santa Claus
I have to admit, Christmas is my favorite time of year.
We spend the whole month of December doing Christmas activities. And one of those days was centered around the book Where, Oh Where, Is Santa Claus? By Lisa Wheeler.
This is such a cute story and it introduces some interesting polar animals as well.
We spent the day doing some fun, yet simple activities centered around the book.
Where, Oh Where, Is Santa Claus Small World
After reading the story during our morning basket, the kiddos went downstairs to find a small world set up.
I love small worlds because it allows them to jump right into the story. They’re great for retelling and creating their own little stories.
For this small world, I made some fake snow by mixing together 3 cups of baking soda and half a cup of white hair conditioner.
I buried Santa in the fake snow and added some of the animals from the story.
This small world kept their attention for over an hour.

Animal Footprints
One thing I love about this story is the polar animals and how they move through the snow.
I wanted to recreate this as we explored footprints in the snow.
We made some white snow by adding together…
- 1 cup cornstarch
- ½ cup salt
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 tbsp cream of tartar
- 1 cup boiling water
We placed everything in a saucepan and mixed over medium heat until a ball is formed.
Once the playdough cooled off, I flattened it on the table and added the animals.
We spent time moving the animals through the playdough like the book says they move, so we could observe their footprints.
Then I just let them play with the animals and playdough anyway they wanted.

Exploring the Snow
One of the last things we did that day, was going out to explore the snow.
I had went out while the youngest was napping to hide Santa.
After nap, we got on our snow gear and set out to find him
Luckily we also found some deer prints, bunny prints, squirrel prints, and of course my footprints from when I went out earlier. They thought my prints were Santa’s.

We love spending time in December doing fun Christmas activities.
