Growing up as friends

Can siblings become best friends? People often ask me what made us decide to have so many children so close together. Having a family as large as ours is not unheard of, particularly in our part of the country.

However, having less than a 2-year gap between each kid (usually more like 18 months apart) is much less common. When asked what made us decide to have them so close together, my response is always the same – so that they’d grow up to be best friends!

Siblings getting along?

These days, it’s rare for siblings in this country to get along with each other, and it’s practically unheard of for siblings to be friends with each other. I think this is so incredibly sad! It just be such a hard thing to live in the same house as somebody who doesn’t like you and doesn’t want to be around you. It’s no wonder kids would rather spend their time with their friends than at home.

This is not the life Ben and I wanted for our family. We wanted to be close; the best of friends – forever. That’s what family is all about, right?

Now I’m not going to say my kids never fight, because heaven knows they do. They fight and argue and squabble and complain about each other. But more often than fights, our days, are filled with love. Our children enjoy playing with each other and spending time together. They are ready and willing to help each other out without even being asked. These kids genuinely love each other. They are truly the best of friends.

Homeschooling for the WIN!

Now homeschooling does not guarantee your children will be best friends. And public schooling does not guarantee your children will automatically hate each other. But the fact that our children spend all day every day with each other, and that whenever they go somewhere outside the home, they are typically accompanied by the whole family, definitely plays a significant role in how they view each other. And I am so grateful we have been blessed enough to always live in an area where homeschooling is legal and easy. I am so grateful my children are the best of friends.
