Children who work on tracing shapes and writing letters by hand will gain muscle memory for their motions. In essence, they learn the patterns of their writing and will be better able to translate them onto a blank sheet of paper when it’s time for them to start handwriting on their own.

Although they won’t be able to write more than their own name for a few more years, they can still have fun following along with your demonstration.
For older children (think kindergartners and 1st grade students) you can introduce letter writing. Sit down with them at their writing desk and write out some Halloween phrases on pieces of paper such as “I love my black cat,” or “I want candy.”
Then they can give these letters to friends and family to show them their Halloween tracing enthusiasm. This is just another fun way to practice pencil control with little to no prep.
Halloween line tracing activities are also a great way to get older children started on writing sentences. Draw the beginning of a sentence with an incomplete phrase such as “I am _____.” Then help your children complete this phrase by drawing headstones, bats, or haunted houses at the end of the sentence.
If they need some help, draw your own pictures in thick, dark ink and stick your paper under theirs so they can easily trace the shape. Once they have the idea down, practice drawing these sentences on blank paper where they can fill in their own descriptions of what is happening around them.
