What You’ll Learn in the Sloth Unit Study

Let’s take a look at what you’ll be learning about with your new (free) Sloth Unit Study.

Sloth Habitats

The tropical rainforests of South and Central America are home to both the three-toed, and two-toed sloths. You’ll learn what makes their habitat special and what other plants and animals create the ecosystem sloths are part of.

Speaking of ecosystems, did you know that sloth fur houses an entire ecosystem all its own? There are creatures living on a sloth that are found nowhere else. Remember the sloth’s strange bathroom habits? Find out which creature takes advantage of the sloth’s poo routine for its own life-cycle.

Adaptations

Sloths’ heterothermic approach to temperature regulation is just one of the many adaptations this amazing creature has utilized in its bid for survival. How many pairs of ribs do you think a sloth has? And why? Does a sloth ever fall out of a tree? What happens when it does? Learn about all these adaptations and more!

Sloth Types

Did you know there are 6 different species of sloth currently alive today? All of them fall under the larger group of either two-toed or three-toed sloths.  Learn what makes each one unique.

Fun Facts

Remember where we started, with sloths risking their lives to use the bathroom? Did you know they are also excellent swimmers? Or that they have special locking tendons in their hands and feet (it’s how they can sleep hanging from branches)?  More fun facts about sloths ahead!

Fun Sloth Activities

Included in this study are some close reading assignments. Close reading requires the student to become a detective. Reading the given text with an intent focus, students are expected to gather every bit of information possible from what is in front of them, without relying on other sources.

In close reading activities, the kids aren’t given a bunch of information or definitions beforehand. The goal of close reading is to encourage independent readers who have the ability to find deeper meaning in the text by considering only the text itself.

Questions to go along with the close reading text assignments are provided.
