The Best Books For Homeschoolers

Stack of the best books for homeschoolers

What books does our homeschool read?

As a homeschooling family, we read a lot of books.

Some of these books we use as part of our teaching process. Others we read just for fun!

Whatever the reason, be it education or entertainment, reading books is fun!

Here are a few of our favorite books for homeschoolers.

The Freedom Fighter

The Freedom Fighter was actually written by Ben’s younger brother, Robert Hess.

The Freedom Fighter was written while Robert was a homeschooled youth as one of his homeschool projects.

We are reading this book as a family and the storyline is fantastic! Very entertaining and captivating.

This one has some political themes that we resonate with as a family, but if that is something you don’t like to participate in, then I suggest you stay away from this book.

Our family highly recommends The Freedom Fighter.

Target Age – Teen and Young Adult

The Tuttle Twins

The Tuttle Twins books are some of our family’s very favorite books. We have read all of the series (as of late 2018 anyway) and we highly recommend each and every one of them.

The Miraculous Pencil is our favorite of the series and one we discuss often as a family.

The Tuttle Twins books teach children about how the world works in easy to understand language.

The Miraculous Pencil, for example, teaches that every item we use was made by more than one person.

This book talks about the free market and how nobody in our society can function in complete solitude and in order for anybody to enjoy prosperity, we must work together.

Great book from a fantastic series.

Target Age – 6 and up

Rush Revere

Rush Revere is another awesome series that we are in the middle of. Our family read Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims together and we look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Rush Revere is a time-traveling teacher who takes is students back in time to learn about American History.

It is highly entertaining and very educational. A must-have for any homeschooler studying American History.

Target Age – Tweens and Teens

The Magic Treehouse

The Magic Treehouse series is a true classic.

This series was recommended to me years ago by one of my friends. Once we read the first book, we were hooked!

These books are great for new readers because they are easy to read and very fun.

The Magic Treehouse is about a brother and a sister who find a library in a magic treehouse. This treehouse takes the duo back in time where they learn about history.

Dinosaurs, Ancient Egypt, Medieval, and so much more!

What a fun way for kids to learn about history.

We own the whole series on audible in addition to the print versions we have in our library.

Target Age – 6 and up

Pokemon

I’m going to show our nerd here by talking about these Pokemon graphic novels.

A few months ago, our oldest Spencer was a reluctant reader. He could read but he hated to read and resisted it at all costs. To the point that he even refused to read street signs or instructions for things he was doing.

One day we were at the library browsing and Spencer happened upon a Pokemon graphic novel. He had been watching the show on Netflix so he was interested enough to at least pick it up and give it a try.

Within three weeks he had devoured the entire series. And he has been a willing and happy reader ever since.

We are fans of these books at our house because they are the reason my 9-year-old likes to read.

Target Age – 8 and up??

The Wonder of Horses

The Wonder of Horses is Nicole’s favorite book.

Nicole is still in the reluctant reader phase, but she’ll pour over this book for hours.

I like it a lot too because it is educational yet simple. And the pictures are full-page and quite beautiful.

Even I have learned quite a bit about horses from this book.

Target Age – 8 and up

Reading Great Books With Audible

Nowadays, we are spending a lot of time listening to audiobooks.

I own most of the above books on audible and I find it very convenient to read great books to the whole family while we’re doing dishes, working outside, or driving in the car.

Audible is also the reason I get any ‘me’ reading in these days.

Yay, audible!
