What Is A STEM Activity?

What Is A STEM Activity? 1 Practical Help for Homeschool Parents and Teachers

Have you ever asked yourself what is a STEM activity? At Hess UnAcademy, we believe that STEAM and STEM activities for kids are an important part of a good education.

But in order to understand why STEAM and STEM activities are so beneficial, it’s best to first understand what STEM is.

So again I ask – what is a STEM activity?

STEM is an acronym that stands for science, technology, engineering, and math.

A STEM activity is an activity that encompasses at least two, and oftentimes three or four, of these subjects. All of these subjects are important for kids to learn, as they help develop problem-solving skills and critical thinking.

But what makes STEAM and STEM activities so special is that they allow kids to apply these skills in a real-world context. For example, if you’re learning about fractions in math class, you might use them to measure the ingredients for a recipe in science class. Or if you’re learning about circuits in engineering class, you might build a gingerbread house in art class.

STEAM and STEM activities are a great way for kids to learn and explore new things, and they’re also a lot of fun!

There are a variety of different STEM activities that kids can participate in, from simple experiments to more complex engineering projects. And the best part is, you don’t need any fancy equipment or materials to do them – many of them can be done with things that you already have around the house!

One of the great things about STEM activities is that they can be adapted to any age group. Additionally, they allow kids to explore their creativity and come up with innovative solutions to everyday problems.

What About STEAM? What is a STEAM Activity?

Answering the question of what is a STEAM activity is very similar to the question of what is a STEM activity. Why? Because STEAM and STEM are almost synonymous, with one exception.

When talking about the acronym STEAM, it stands for science, technology, engineering, ART, and math. That’s why many STEAM activities also incorporate art and design.

When you add art to subjects such as math, science, engineering, and technology, you get a more well-rounded education. Art can activate brain neurons that are not usually used when kids are learning from textbooks or worksheets.

And when you include art and creativity in your education, you’re preparing kids for the future workplace, which is becoming more and more reliant on these skills.

If you’re looking for a way to help your child excel in school, adding hands-on activities to your STEM curriculum is a great place to start!
