Is CTCMath Best Online Math Curriculum for Homeschoolers?

Is CTCMath Best Online Math Curriculum for Homeschoolers? 1 Practical Help for Homeschool Parents and Teachers

Today I am going to share with you a little gem I have been sitting on for almost a year now. Today I am going to share with you my favorite resource for basic math and pre-algebra with a CTCMath review.

As a homeschooling parent, what is the most common question you hear? (I’m talking specifically questions asked by other homeschooling parents.)

Disclaimer – I was compensated by CTCMath for sharing my honest opinions in this post. But I was a paying customer before writing this post and all opinions will forever remain my own. I was not required to post a positive review.

Is CTCMath a Good Homeschool Math Curriculum?

I’m going to go out on a limb here and make a guess that the question you hear the most either has something to do with your homeschooling method or your favorite homeschool curriculum.

More specifically, your favorite homeschool math curriculum.

Do you have an easy answer to this question? Do you have a favorite math curriculum in your homeschool? Have you asked (and answered) yourself the question, what is the best online homeschool math curriculum?

I have been homeschooling my children for more than 10 years. During that time, with every new grade level, I have bounced around from math resource to math resource.

What can I say? I’m very particular about the products and companies that I commit my loyalty to. After all, I’m not about to put my children’s education into the hands of just anybody!

We’ve tried many math resources over the years. Each resource has offered both pros and cons. But only one resource has been good enough to entice me to commit to a multi-month subscription or multi-month family plan within the first few days of trying it.

And only one has kept both me and my kids happy to work on math each and every day.

Basic Math and Pre-Algebra with CTCMath Review

I first heard about the CTCMath Homeschool Family Membership from another homeschool blogger.

Her email came at just the right time. I had been getting more and more irritated with the math curriculum we were using at the time. The kids were getting upset and frustrated and I was just about done.

I received an email that highlighted the benefits of CTCMath and why this blogger and her kids were so happy with their membership.

I decided I didn’t have anything to lose. After all, I already hated the math program we had been using. So I jumped on the free trial. And I was hooked from the very beginning.

Before my trial was even up, I knew I had to become a paying customer and add this great math curriculum to our homeschool schedule. So I committed to an 18-month membership and paid it all in advance, right then and there.

Almost a year later, I am happy to say we are all still loving our CTCMath homeschool family membership. Seriously, this has been the best online homeschool math curriculum for our family.

Use CTCMath for Basic Math and Pre-Algebra

My kids have not progressed into the advanced grade levels of math yet (although CTCMath has those high school math options once we get there). Right now most of my kids are either learning geometry, basic math or pre-algebra.

Pictured is my 7-year-old and a recent basic math lesson. He is currently working on the basics of division.

For the past few days, he has been presented with video lessons with interactive questions that go over the concepts of multiplication and division. Each video lesson covers these concepts in a slightly different way.

I appreciate how he has been able to learn these concepts forwards, backwards, and upside down. He’s really understanding what he’s being taught.

In the past, we have relied on multiplication songs for learning to multiply and divide. We will still use that method because it gives a good and solid foundation, but I’m glad we have access to the CTCMath online lessons as well.

At 7 years old, my son is already better at multiplication and division than I was at 10.

My other son is learning Pre-Algebra concepts such as factorization. These are concepts I don’t feel confident in personally so I am loving having access to a math curriculum that covers all this with no extra work on my part.

CTCMath Benefits

As a busy homeschool mom, I have personally benefited greatly from our CTCMath homeschool family membership.

My time (and my stress levels!) have been freed up immensely since moving to this program. I no longer spend time worrying about what (or how) to teach my kids basic math concepts.

I also no longer stress about what will happen when my kids hit higher levels in math and need to learn concepts that I have never felt confident teaching.

My kids have benefited from these easy to understand lessons. Even my daughter, who has always struggled with math, finishes her lessons with a sense of accomplishment rather than a desire to throw her computer against the wall.

As a homeschool mom who’s been around the block a few times, let me share with you one of my favorite parts about CTCMath – something that very few other online math curriculums offer.

With CTCMath, you cannot cheat your way to the next level.

Honestly? This feature was the real deal-clincher for me. Do you know how many other math programs we’ve tried where the kids can learn the system instead of the concepts?

It’s ridiculous how many times (with other programs) my kids have ended up in the heart of lessons they have no basic understanding of due to weaseling their way through the program. I love that they can’t do that with CTCMath!!

Our 12 Favorite Things About CTCMath

I have found so many things that I love about CTCMath. But here are a few of my favorite things about CTCMath.

  1. It’s a completely online program! No pencils, worksheets, or textbooks making a mess in my already messy house!  Video tutorials are easy to follow and interactive questions are mess-free. (We still use printable worksheets for some fun variety sometimes but I love that they’re no longer required.)
  2. Low-prep on my part. All I have to do is make sure the kids know their tasks for the day and away they go!
  3. The ability to rewind a lesson as many times as my child needs.  Each child can go at his or her own pace.
  4. I can control the level of ‘mastery’ and the number of correct answers each individual child needs to achieve before moving on.
  5. I can assign tasks and deadlines – or I don’t have to and I can leave things more flexible!
  6. My kids can do their lessons on the laptop, desktop, or tablet.
  7. Customer service is en-pointe. Every time I have a question, they are very quick to respond.
  8. I am emailed regular progress reports as well as detailed reports when a child misses or hits a deadline.
  9. There is no ‘cheating the system’ on the kids’ parts to skip ahead before they are ready. They must truly understand the material before moving on.
  10. The ability to accommodate multiple users for one price. I currently have 5 students signed up under my account and their customer service rep said to email them anytime I decide I need more. (I don’t know about you but I hate when companies nickel-and-dime large homeschooling families.)
  11. There is a simple placement test available if you don’t know what grade level to stick your child in.
  12. This one online math program can follow us through every future school year and all of our math skills!  Upper levels of high school include trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus, and more.

Providing tutoring services is not easy. As a parent, I love to see my son going to a tutoring center for extra help, and my son can improve his math skill there as well. But during 2020 and 2021, I will keep my son home and get online materials to do so. CTCMath looks like it will be a great supplemental program to help with my son's math skills. Thank you.

Wow! This is so crazy because I was literally up last night thinking about a math curriculum for my kids! I received an email with this curriculum! I checked it out and was in tears because math is not my strong area & one of my kids struggles in math as well. They are doing virtual learning this year, but I keep going back and forth about if I should homeschool my 3 older kids. I’m homeschooling my 5 year old.

So, when I do this, should I pick the single or family plan? Two of my kids are rising 6th graders, my daughter is a rising 5th grader & there is my 5 year old daughter. What happens if I do the single plan then decide to pull my kids out of public school? This post was very helpful & a confirmation that I have indeed found the right math curriculum! Thank you so much!

I'm so glad to help! What good timing. As for your question, I would recommend doing the free trial and testing it out to see if it would be a good supplement for your kids. If it does work out, or if you do decide to officially homeschool, with the number and age of kids you have, the family plan would probably work best for you rather than the single plan. While the single plan would give you supplemental math help for all ages, you wouldn't be able to track each kids' progress without the family plan. If all you want is a supplemental help to go along with public school, khan academy would probably work better. However, if you do decide to homeschool, the family plan with CTCMath is the best math curriculum we've found.
