Family Fun Is Important For Successful Kids
What does fun have to do with successful kids?
Good question!
But before we get into that, we need to make one clarification. It is not merely family fun that is important for successful kids – it is wholesome recreational activities that are important for successful kids.
Wow. What a mouthful. Wholesome Recreational Activities.
We could have called it fun. We could have called it play. We could have called it recreational activities. But we are not going to call it that.
Why?
Well, all those things can be good, but until it can fall in the category of wholesome recreational activity it is not a principle of success. The wholesome part is the key.
What are Wholesome Recreational Activities?
Let’s break it down.
According to dictionary.com
Wholesome:
Conducive to or suggestive of good health and physical well-being.
Conducive to or promoting moral well-being.
dictionary.com
Recreational Activities are activities that are done for entertainment or pleasure. Fun!
So a Wholesome Recreational Activity is an activity that is fun, but that also encourages well being (whether that be physical, moral, or spiritual)
Family Fun and Wholesome Recreational Activities
For most people, especially for children, playtime and fun come easily to them.
But just because they have fun and know how to play does not mean it is wholesome. Therefore a parent’s direction in this is so important.
You as the parent need to guide your children into hobbies and fun activities that are also wholesome in nature.

What Recreational Activities Should Be Avoided?
Let us give a list of things that are not in the wholesome category.
This will not be a complete list but should give you a basic idea of where to steer clear.
- Anything where drugs, alcohol or potentially addictive substances are involved.
- Things that encourage the destruction (or the enjoyment of destruction) of human health or human life
- Activities and media that encourage or glorify evil.
- Activities and media that are destructive to the sanctity of marriage and family
- Activities or media that encourage the abuse of people or substances.
- Activities that may seem good but that take unnecessary amounts of time away from better things – such as God and family
I know that pretty well eliminates everything in the world as far as popular media goes.
This list rules out many activities.
Trust me – this has been a major struggle in our house. But we just didn’t feel comfortable allowing our children to be exposed to that kind of thing in our home.
The home should be a safe refuge from the world.
So instead of allowing a radio DJ or a TV network into our home, which invites the influence of people we could not control, instead, we invest in apps that we can control.
Instead of listening to the radio where we are at the mercy of the DJ, we listen to Pandora or Spotify.
Instead of watching cable or satellite, we invest in online movie networks. There are many to choose from, so choose what works best for your family.
At various points, we have paid for Living Scriptures, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. All of these fulfilled our needs at various points, although we only have Hulu and Amazon Prime right now.
So what is a wholesome recreational activity?
What Are Some Wholesome Recreational Activities?
This is an activity that makes you a better person but is also fun.
It can be sports or music, art or outdoor adventures. Watching good clean movies, playing games or exploring someplace new. The possibilities of family fun wholesome recreational activities are endless!
Good fun is a necessary part of learning.
When you are learning something new, you tend to remember best the things you studied first and the things you studied last. The stuff in the middle tends to be forgotten.
This means that you should create as many starts and stops throughout your learning experiences as is reasonably possible.
This also means you will need to fill the time gaps in between with wholesome recreational activities.
The more you space out the learning with fun in between, the more will be retained by your students.
This does not mean that the fun needs to be void of education. It just needs to be void of sit down and crank out a textbook style education.
Making Fun A Priority
To successfully pull off all larger activities, you will need to get good at scheduling in advance.
Many people successfully work into their budgets a savings for some future need.
This is great!
But it is also a great idea to budget in some fun money from every paycheck.
Put some of the fun money toward vacations and big fun.
Many people try and save vacations and time off from work for “when they get a moment”. If you do that then your life will pass you by and it will be all work and no fun.
The ironic thing is you will likely get the same amount done as you would have if had you just scheduled and taken the time off. This is because you need to recharge to be at your best.
Even God took a rest from his work! Of course we humans can’t expect to never ever take any time off!

Unchanging Truths
There are many great success principles out there. The best ones are based on truth. Unchanging truth that comes from The Scriptures. But the 10 we covered throughout this 10-day series are also referenced in a very special place – in The Family, A Proclamation To The World.
I know the principles taught in this document are truth.
And I know that as hard as we worked on this 10-day series, we barely scratched the surface of the good found in this proclamation. We definitely did not do this article justice.
That document can be read in its entirety here.
