Do you include typing practice or typing exercises in your daily lessons? As computers and technology take a greater part in our lives, parents everywhere are realizing the importance of touch typing skills and thus are on the lookout for typing practices and the best online typing programs for kids.

Are you worried about your child’s future as a typist? Are you wondering if your child even needs to learn touch typing skills?

Let me tell you a story.

When I was a kid, my dad put a lot of emphasis on our learning how to type. He made sure each of us kids engaged in daily typing practice until our typing speed hit a certain level.

When I was in school, I always appreciated my fast typing skills. They came in handy every time I tried to write a paper as well as whenever I tried to chat with a friend online.

When I had graduated from high school and I went to interview for my first professional-level job, they had me do a typing test. I didn’t think anything of it and breezed through the test.

As it turns out, I tripled the minimum required WPM that typing test was looking for, and I ended up getting offered a job multiple levels above the job for which I had originally applied, all because of my high keyboarding skills.

And even when my lifestyle lets me go years without having to type, the muscle memory that comes with memorizing the keystrokes never truly leaves me, and I’m always able to get my real-time typing speed back up to snuff with minimal effort.

If your child is planning on going into a field that requires computers of any kind, he will always be grateful you encouraged him to learn how to type.

Unfortunately, the rapid typing software I used for my typing practice and lessons as a child is no longer available. But thankfully, there are many other great typing programs available for us to take advantage of.

Free Online Typing Practice Using Games

Free online typing games are a great way for kids to practice typing. Some also include online typing lessons you can use to gauge your child’s typing skills.

As a child, my programmer dad placed great emphasis on typing skills and as such, I’ve always been a skilled typist. So naturally, I have been searching for a way to teach my kids keyboarding since they were old enough to use a computer.

I know there are plenty of free typing games and lessons available online, but if I’m being honest, they are not created equal. Some free typing programs are not very good.

Fortunately, there are still a couple of free typing resources available for kids and families to use. The two best free online typing games are KidzType and TypeDojo.

Enjoy Free Typing Games with KidzType

When I first had my kids try Kidztype, we were impressed at the number of typing practice games available. There are more than a dozen games for kids to learn and practice typing. Learn the keyboard layouts while playing a variety of fun games, all while increasing your fingers’ muscle memory.

There’s a reason so many people consider this to be one of the best typing programs for elementary students.

Do you use educational computer games in your home? I know my kids do their best learning while they are playing.

One of KidzType’s most popular games, dance mat typing, is incredibly well-liked and I actually had many friends refer me to this game before I was brave enough to try it. I wish I had listened to them sooner! It really is one of the best typing training online programs for kids!

The first time we played Dance Mat, I was very impressed with the visual features. Even my husband commented on how convenient it was that the screen shows you a keyboard and which finger on your hand you should use to type with, in addition to the actual letters you are working on typing.

This is the first fun typing game I have tried with my kids that didn’t leave them frustrated and begging to be finished. For once, learning to type hadn’t turned into yet another chore. Something we all want in our elementary typing programs!

There’s certainly a reason homeschoolers all over the internet say KidzType is the best typing software you can find for free. This free website is perfect for the mom who wants her kids to learn how to type without a lot of time or money invested on her part.

Free Speed Typing Tests with TypeDojo

TypeDojo is another great place to gauge your child’s typing skills.

Use the TypeDojo WPM test to get your child’s WPM, or words per minute. Knowing your child’s WPM, or typing speed, is a good way to determine your child’s typing skills which can help you to decide what they need to work on next in their typing lessons. As your child grows, include his WPM in his resume to show off crucial typing skills to potential employers.

And conveniently, the more your child types, the better he will be at spelling.

Paid Online Typing Software

Some people prefer to sign their children up for a paid online typing software and then use free typings games as supplements.

If this is you, might I recommend one of the following paid typing programs.

• Typesy

Type To Learn is a great program that is even trusted amongst public schools. They offer their program in the form of a year’s subscription.

Type To Learn is a popular choice for an touch-type typing software because the program is easy to use and understand. Graphics are engaging and the visuals do a great job of showing kids exactly what they need to do to improve their typing skill levels.

Unfortunately for us large families, Type To Learn is a typing course that charges by the student. But if you’ve got a small family, or if you only have one child learning typing skills at a time, this is a good option.

Typing Pal is an online typing program that allows up to 5 students under one year’s subscription, which is great for those with multiple budding typists. Your child can practice typing while enjoying challenging learn to type games and lessons, all while interacting with some charming characters who act as your child’s typing tutors.

Typing Pal is a typing program that will make your kid forget he’s even learning keyboarding, he’s having so much fun. The video tutorials and the virtual keyboard are easy to understand.

Touch-Type Read and Spell is a program that specializes in teaching special needs kids reading and spelling skills while also teaching them to type.

It’s definitely on the expensive side, but if you’re looking for a multi-sensory program that teaches touch-typing skills while also improving reading and spelling, Touch-Type Read and Spell is a good program to consider.

Typesy is another option for an online typing tutor that has good reviews. All of these paid typing programs are great for kids typing practice and lessons, if you’re willing to invest a little bit of money for some critical life skills.

We have used Typesy in the past with minimal complaining. The customer service line is not very helpful, but if you don’t run into any problems, that’s not an issue.

Reading Kingdom is not an official typing program, rather it is a learn-to-read program, but it teaches kids to read by teaching them to type, so I included it in this list. It’s a bit pricey but when you consider you’re getting a learn-to-read program at the same time, that’s to be expected.

And if you’re looking for an offline typing program, Mavis Beacon is always a popular choice that has lasted the test of time with outstanding reviews.

But at the end of the day, KidzType and TypeDojo are the best free typing programs available on the internet and I highly recommend them as part of your child’s typing lessons.

Whether you choose a paid typing software, free typing games, or a combination of the two, you will never regret investing in your child’s touch typing skills. Your child, and his future employers/clients, will thank you too!
