10 Awesome Free Stem Activities For 2nd Graders 1 Practical Help for Homeschool Parents and Teachers
stem activities for second graders

Are you looking for exciting and stimulating STEM activities for 2nd graders?

A big part of a child’s academic success is due to their wonderful parents’ involvement and the love and support that they receive at home. As a proud STEM parent, I know you are just as amazed as I am at how much your child has learned and grown in the last year. Every grade they complete is a step closer to realizing their dreams and the boundless opportunities this world we live in has to offer them.

Time truly flies by when it’s filled with enjoyable learning experiences. And being in second grade is just part of the promising educational journey and academic accomplishments ahead.

Second grade provides the foundation for many of the advanced skills and knowledge your child will continue to build upon in later grades.

As academic tasks become more challenging, there’s an emphasis on fostering a growing mindset, recognizing that errors are a valuable part of the learning experience, and developing resilience. As subjects become a bit more challenging, second graders are often encouraged to start thinking more critically, asking more in-depth questions, and making connections between different topics.

Young children naturally have a sense of wonder and a desire to discover how things work, whether it’s by listening, touching, or tasting.

STEM education channels this curiosity by integrating the study of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Instead of teaching these four areas as individual subjects, STEM education aims to blend them, emphasizing real-world applications for a combined learning experience.

Of course, your 2nd grader will love every activity and project STEM has to offer, and they will continue to build on the foundation already laid by you in Kindergarten and 1st Grade.

Why Should You Include 2nd Grade STEM Activities in Your Lesson Plans?

With the introduction of STEM concepts early in a child’s foundational years, you as a parent will lay a solid foundation upon which more complex ideas can be built, for the grades to come.

In second grade, children are characteristically curious and often question how things work. STEM activities cater to this curiosity, providing hands-on experiences and answers in a fun and engaging manner helping them to understand the relevance of what they are learning.

I remember as a student in school I always found myself questioning why I even needed to study ‘this’ or ‘that’ as I was probably never going to use it anyway. STEM education takes that negative mindset we so often tend to have with learning out of the equation.

I think for me as a parent, this is almost reason enough to include these brilliant methods in my lesson plans as it will foster essential skills that will benefit my child not only in their academic careers but also their professional ones.

What are the Benefits of Incorporating STEM Education Into Your Child’s Learning?

I once read a quote that said “The future is still so much bigger than the past.” It made me realize that the future is undetermined and wide open to countless opportunities. The past is fixed and unchangeable thus no matter what has already happened or been accomplished in the past, there is still more potential, prospects, and experiences to come. It’s a perspective that prioritizes forward thinking and the possibilities that lie ahead.

As parents, we must not only highlight opportunities for our children but also inspire them and appreciate their worth.

Given the endless number of wonderful benefits regarding STEM education, we’ll take a moment to share how it can empower your child to realize their utmost potential, paving the way for a future they can take pride in.

  • STEM education enhances critical thinking, teaching children to assess situations and create logical solutions.
  • It nurtures creativity, crucial for crafting innovative solutions in engineering and technology.
  • Teamwork is prioritized, helping improve your child’s social skills.
  • It encourages adaptability in both learning and problem-solving.
  • Children benefit from practical, hands-on learning experiences.
  • Relevant learning helps kids better grasp the world around them.
  • Skills gained from STEM are invaluable, preparing children for various professions and life scenarios.

These are just a few of the many amazing benefits of STEM education and its activities and projects.

10 Fun & Educational STEM Activities For 2nd Graders

Here are some of our absolute favorite second Grade STEM activities

1. Regrow Food From Kitchen Scraps

regrowing food from kitchen scraps in an old fish tank. Lettuce, green onions, celery, and more

These days we are all about going green and saving money, but we will spend a little more if it says ‘Organic’ on the label, right? Why not invest your time making your own organic produce with your child and avoid those nasty pesticides and genetically modified organisms?

This STEM activity is perfect to help teach your second Grader how to create renewable food sources, plant life cycles, sustainability, and the basics of gardening, plus your produce is guaranteed to be tastier and fresher.

This project is environmentally friendly, cost-free, and fun.  It can be done by anyone and be enjoyed by everyone. Seems like a winner to me!

2. Dragon Paper Airplane STEM Project

Let your kid’s imagination fly away with this diverse and hands-on STEM activity for 2nd graders. We know all our children love to play with paper airplanes so why not teach them the science behind it and how airplanes work in the real world?

Your child will explore aerodynamics, gravity, and the principle of lift through this paper airplane experiment. Additionally, you can also delve into statistics, charting, and specific math concepts such as measurement.

From the simplest of paper planes to our dragon plane, “Let your dreams be your wings.” (As a bonus, a cheesy quote from me to you)

3. Exploding Ivory Soap

Ready for an unexpected and amazing reaction from your second grader?

We have the messiest but cleanest activity just for you.

The phenomenon with Ivory soap in a microwave might seem like an explosion, but it’s actually the result of a quick expansion due to the water and air pockets within the soap getting heated. This is one of our favorite Science experiments because of the interesting results. It is easy and you practically only need your bar of soap and microwave.

4. Marble Eggs

Have you come across the term “Hydro Dipping”? While it might remind you of tie-dye, the process and materials used are quite distinct, making them fundamentally different.  Hydro Dipping is an extremely fun process that will teach your child the concept of density while being arty and looking very smart doing it.

This is a technique where your child can apply printed designs to three-dimensional objects like an egg. A water-soluble film with a design is placed atop the water and activated with a chemical solution to liquefy the print. The object is then dipped into the water, allowing the design to wrap around and cling to it giving it a perfect marble look.

The activity is not only fun to complete but you get a memento once you are done. Just another one of our egg-celent second grade STEM activities for you to try.

5. Toothpick Bridge STEM Challenge

Bridge made out of toothpicks and spice drops

What I love most about this experiment is that you can do it each and every year and the outcome will never be the same. You can monitor your child’s progress on how they apply Physics, Maths, and Engineering skills to complete the structure. You will be nothing but proud of how their skill set has developed.

This STEM experiment is popular and simple with almost no prepping needed. It will keep your 2nd Grader busy for quite some time as kids are generally very innovative about joining the parts together and they really have fun doing it.

Play is essential to a child’s physical, social, and mental development. Have you ever thought about the advantages of your child creating their own toy to play with? I hadn’t either until I delved into the benefits of this activity.

Homemade toys are special. They are more sentimental, and they give you time to bond with your child.  Hand-made toys help children to learn and develop by boosting their creativity, curiosity, and imagination. The more tools there are for imaginative play the better, thus making our awesome STEM chomping dragon a perfect activity for your second grader.  They will learn about simple machines, mechanics, and engineering.

A whole lot of STEM going around in this project.

7. DIY Anemometer

10 Awesome Free Stem Activities For 2nd Graders 3

An anemometer is like a special wind detective. A tool that tells us how fast the wind is blowing by spinning its arms around when the wind blows on them. The faster its arms spin, the stronger the wind is. So, if you ever wonder if it’s a windy day or not and if it is too windy to fly a kite, an anemometer can help you know!

This is a fun STEM activity for 2nd graders because it lets you dive into physics by exploring wind speed and also lets you try your hand at building something. Don’t miss the section in our article that guides you on how to make this project just right for your second grader, with special steps to customize the anemometer for them.

8. DIY Pizza Box Solar Oven S’mores

Mom, are you ready to burn some calories? I promise this will be better than any push-up or squat. Wink-wink.

This activity will make you all ‘gooey’ inside and you get to make some s’more memories with your child. Pun intended!

Okay, but seriously now, this activity is one for the books. The ones we can eat usually are, right? It is the easiest way to get the kids outside and excited.

I just love projects gone right, that are fun, easy to set up, and educational.

Teach your child all about thermal dynamics e.g. thermal energy and heat retention.  It will keep them fascinated and make them love science even more. The s’more fun, the better.

10. Chromatography Flowers Experiment

So I decided to include this activity as we not only love Science at Hess UnAcademy, but we really love pretty colors and beautiful objects too.

Colors are like a big mix of tiny color bits that blend together to create the single color registered by our eyes. With a cool trick (process) called paper chromatography, we can see all the little colors that come together to make one big color!  It is a technique that separates mixtures. I enjoy this activity as it is so versatile you can create a cluster of different objects with your paper, and it can make wonderful cards and crafts. Science is, therefore, the gift that keeps on giving.
