What is STEM?
The STEM concept came about several years ago when a group of educational professionals stamped science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as important yet often under-taught subjects. They projected these to be important components for children to be successful both now in academics and later in life in whatever career path they chose.
Later, an ‘A’ was added for art, making STEAM, but most people are more familiar with STEM vs STEAM so that’s what we’re going with here. However, most of these dragon STEM activities can also be considered artistic for STEAM.
There is also a hands-on, project-based culture built around the STEM method which a lot of homeschoolers love. Nothing says fun learning more than getting your hands dirty, figuring out how things work, and coming up with ways to solve problems naturally. STEM provides these kinds of opportunities and more.
Benefits of Incorporating STEM into Your Homeschool
If you’re not already making STEM a part of your homeschool, I’d love to share some reasons why you should. Beyond taking education outside the box, a STEM-based education provides:
- Opportunities for your child to be creative.
- Preparation for current and upcoming technological advancements.
- Enhanced skills for problem-solving.
- Opportunities for your child to have a greater understanding of concepts.
- The ability to learn team building skills.
- Perseverance and determinations.
- Ability to foster a love for learning.

How to Incorporate Dragon STEM Into Your Homeschool
Teaching about dragons may not seem like the ideal homeschool lesson, but there is so much that can be learned! Before you skip over adding this into your lesson plans, I have some quick tips to share with you.
If you’re thinking about adding dragons into your child’s lesson plan, you’ll want to plan for it. While it’s up to your own interpretation and belief if dragons are real, you can use them to teach your children the difference between fantasy and mythology.
I’ve got a fun medieval times unit study here if you want to include this lesson plan in your homeschool. This unit study is geared towards kids ages 5-14.
Additionally, you can also choose a few books to read along with some of the STEM activities listed above. You can even throw in a few good kid-friendly movies like How to Train Your Dragon or Pete’s Dragon.
Consider teaching different body parts of the dragon (nostrils, horns, wing webs, claws, spade, etc.). Print dragon coloring pages, play dragon games, and even make dragon-inspired foods.
This can easily be turned into a quick unit study that could last a week, or even longer. The idea is to make learning fun while teaching your child valuable concepts and principles that will be beneficial throughout their educational journey.
I’d like to hear from you! What are some cool dragon activities you’ve tried? Let me know in the comments below!
